Dawson heritage (1957)

Penny's first birthday (so this would be April 21, 1957). Vivian and Patrick watch from the safety of the porch. The photo is taken at Edie and Wit Bishop's house in Imperoyal Village, Dartmouth N.S. Imperoyal Village was a housing development constructed by Imperial Oil (Esso) for its employees. The houses were removed from the site in the 1970's or late 60's and placed on foundations farther out toward Cole Harbour if I recall correctly. The houses were fine examples of 1940's Craftsman architecture that was popular at the time. It wouldn't be too difficult to find them if they're still standing nearly seventy years later. Oh yes, did I mention that this is my sister Penny, her birthday, how cute she is? Ok, well, the wooden sidewalks are cool don't you think? Posted by Picasa

Patick, I lived in Imperoyal, outside the Village until around 1960. I discovered your blog while searching for info on Imperoyal School. I retired from the Navy/Air Force in 1992 and am a semi pro singer-songwriter (Wow! this is strange!). A while back, I composed a tune and called it "Mr. Bishop's New Car"...because I remember Mr. Bishop bringing home a new(?) blue(?) Ford(?), and all us kids ,of course, had to go see it. I also seem to remember that they had a daughter named Jean who was married to a Navy pilot. I recognized the front portion of the house in that picture! Please believe me that this is not a hoax of any kind. How can I contact you?

There are several images on this blog of Imperoyal Village now that I look again. The photo of me in the Ranger's sweater is taken in Wit Bishop's dining room. The photo of my brothers and sisters in front of Wit's car has the back yards of the row of houses next to Wit and Edie's in the background. The photo of Wit and I sitting in the Adirondack chairs (both with arms crossed) is taken in his back yard.
Imperoyal Village is one of those places of the imagination now.
